Save the Dates: Rising Kindergarten Orientation-April 29, 9:15-11am

Next week, we focus on the Positivity Project (P2) Character Strength of ZEST/ENTHUSIASM. Zest/Enthusiasm is described by P2 as follows:  You approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you.  For more information, see the Zest/Enthusiam, or any other character strength card at https://camelotes.fcps.edu/node/1945.

Parent/Guardian-Principal Coffee. Our next coffee is TOMORROW Friday, February 21 at 8:30am, and it will last about an hour. We will share about school programs, but also provide time for questions and dialogue. School-aged students may be dropped off in the cafeteria at 8:30am.

Yearbook Sales. Yearbooks may be ordered via paper form, or online at https://ybpay.lifetouch.com/Order/SelectJob. The order deadline is April 17. Yearbooks cost $19.  Yearbooks will be distributed in June.

Dragons Share. Many thanks to the families who sign up!  If you would like to help deliver unopened food items, fruit, and milk from our school cafeteria to Food For Others at 2938 Prosperity Drive on Wednesdays/Fridays, please sign up! You may collect items from the refrigerator (anytime) on your assigned day. Food for Others is open from 9:30am-5pm, Monday through Friday. PTA News

Sign up to Participate in our 16th Annual International Night, Friday March 6th, 6:30 pm.  Join us for Camelot ES International Night as we celebrate our international, cultural and regional diversity. There are many ways to participate and share your heritage with the community:

  • Bring a dish to share: we are planning to provide a sampling for over 300 people, so please share your favorite international dish or dessert cut into small serving sizes for 12-15 people. (We provide serving utensils & sample cups. Sample cups can be picked up in the school office before the event.)
  • Parade of Nations: students can dress to represent a country or culture to participate in this parade.
  • Be an “Ambassador”-create and host a table display to showcase your own cultural pride or enthusiasm for a place around the world (or region within the USA). Displays may include native costumes, information/examples of culture, art, music, food, books, videos, games/activities and more.
  • Make the rhythm of night: This year we are building a soundtrack for International Night with music from around the world, be it pop, folk, rock or dance, to play throughout the night. Send your favorite songs with the title and artist to Laura at l_knighton@hotmail.com
  • Be a Volunteer: We need volunteers to take a 30 minute shift to help us serve food, run activities and games, and help us have a successful event.

ACCEPTANCE MONTH. This week’s focus is on Disability Awareness. Our Walk in My Shoes event will be tomorrow, Friday Feb. 21st  We urge you to talk with your child at home about the event and ask them what they learned and experienced. Spirit Day is also tomorrow: Wear a chosen color to support disability awareness. Wear blue/yellow to support own syndrome, light blue or silver to support dyslexia, royal blue to support autism, green to support cerebral palsy, and gold/silver to support deaf/hard of hearing and orange to support ADHD.

Next week’s focus is Celebrating our Diversity. Spirit Day next Friday, Feb. 28: Dress in tie-dye or clothing representing native country.

March Madness is Coming! PTA Basketball Game is March 27. Come support Camelot parents and faculty members as they battle it out on the basketball court!  Watch the cheerleaders perform, have a pizza dinner, and enjoy the game. Baked goods and spiritwear will also be available for purchase. It will be a night to remember—kids (and parents!) will have a blast dancing along to the cheerleaders, watching their parents and teachers play, and participating in a free throw shootout.

Lost and Found. Please take a look at this Lost and Found video which was made 2 weeks ago. (It may not include the newest items.) We will be donating items to the Salvation Army on February 14, so please encourage your child to look for lost items before then. (We will not donate found coats at this time—just sweatshirts and other clothing items that have been around a while.)

ACCEPTANCE MONTH. This week focused on Anti-Bullying, Spirit Day and tomorrow is a spirit day-Wear Red or Pink to say no to bullying.  We are so excited for a full month focused on continuing to build an inclusive culture at Camelot. There are weekly topics about acceptance, important classroom activities and discussions, and our Walk In My Shoes event on February 21st - where students engage in hands on activities related to living with various disabilities.  

For the Walk in My Shoes event on 2/21, we still need volunteers to give time for a half day (9-11:45 or 11:40-3:40) or whole day (9-3:40). Please contact Laura Allen at lallen5@gmail.com or 703-598-4987 to volunteer.

Volunteer Spotlight: Kate Studeman--Thank you Kate for stepping up to lead the BINGO event last Friday! She did an amazing job of coordinating all the details so everything ran so smoothly. Even with a foot in a boot, she  kept smiling and pushing through to the bitter end when everything was cleaned up. We are grateful for your service to the community Kate!

BINGO NIGHT: Tomorrow Night 6-8pm. Please join us for Bingo Night tomorrow evening! It’s a fun night for the entire family. Doors open at 6pm for concessions and to grab your seat; the Camelot cheer team will perform at 6:30 and will kick off the Bingo games immediately following their performance through 8pm.

InCourage Burke - Toy Story PTA drop-off fundraiser! January 24th 6:30-9:30pm. Parents can enjoy some downtime or a date while the kids get exercise and have a great time with friends, old and new. Pizza dinner is included. There will be Toy Story themed active games and crafts, and we'll end the night with a showing of Toy Story 4! The cost is $25 per child and the most awesome part is that 100% of the proceeds go to CAMELOT!! Winner winner pizza dinner!! Register (each child separately) at this link.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Kelly and Dave Pike!  Kelly and Dave have run Donuts with Grownups two years in a row now and it is a happy very morning for kids and their grownup friends. Thank you to Kelly and Dave for all of your hard work organizing the schedule, layout, ordering and volunteers for this wonderful event! Their daughters Emmy and Maddie also helped out-- it’s great to see the entire family come together to help run an event for the community. We are grateful for you Pike family!

Chuck E Cheese Restaurant Night, Wednesday January 15th. Join us for a fun night out! Chuck E Cheese Night at Pickett Center location is next Wednesday, 3-8pm. Teachers eat free! Kids each receive a sticker for 10 free tokens and will have coupons for games and food in Thursday folders, plus the option to buy an All You Can Play wristband. The more kids who attend, the better percentage Camelot will earn! Let's meet up and have fun!

Early Release at 1:50 for HS & K-6

Good Morning,

Fairfax County Public Schools has announced a 2-hour early Release today due to the anticipated snow and possible hazardous driving conditions later today. Because of this early release, Camelot ES Head Start and K-6 will dismiss at 1:50 PM this afternoon. Camelot DHH preschool will dismiss around 11:00, or as soon as the buses arrive.  More information about the early release procedures including details about SACC and after-school activities can be found here.

Please anticipate that your students will be walking home or arriving at their bus stop two hours earlier than the regular schedule. All other regular dismissal procedures will remain in place at Camelot.

Our staff will be working hard this afternoon to ensure a safe trip home from school for all of our students.We will reach out to you throughout the day if there are any additional updates.

Test Scores in Thursday Folders. We want to alert 1st and 2nd grade parents/guardians that Naglieri (1st) and Cognitive Abilities (2nd) score reports were sent home in Thursday folders yesterday. Score reports were also sent with certain 3rd-6th graders whose parents/guardians were notified that their students would be tested.

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Level IV Referral Deadline is January 9. In early December, we held a meeting for parents/guardians on the topic of referrals for Level IV AAP service for rising 3rd-8th grade students. The presentation is available on the FCPS AAP website: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs. See the Parent Presentation and the Forms tabs. Parent/guardian referrals must be turned into Karen Mitchell, Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, at Camelot by/on January 9.

Fun Run Top Earners. Thanks to all of you who donated, ran, helped your kids gather pledges, we exceeded our goal and raised over $22,000 for Camelot PTA programs and events!   A very special congrats to our grade winners for being the top earner in their grade:  Kinder: Aidan B, First: Alexa H, Second: Charlotte S, Third: Jayden C, Fourth: Tooley A, Fifth: Ali L, Sixth: Avery C

These students win a $50 gift card to Zappos for new running shoes! The third grade and Ms. Troup’s second grade class will enjoyed a popcorn party yesterday, and Mr. Salerno was duct taped to the wall this morning! The scooter race and Sliming the PE teachers will take place in Jan when we have a dry day.

Dragon Leadership Council (DLC) Supplies Collection. As part of our focus on the character strength of kindness, our 5th and 6th grade students in the DLC are organizing a hygiene supplies collection for the Bailey’s Crossroads Homeless Shelter. Needed item include bath soap, shampoo, deodorant, hairbrushes, combs, toothpaste and toothbrushes. New supplies may be dropped off at school between December 10-18.

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Level IV Referral Deadline is January 9. Last week, we held a meeting for parents/guardians on the topic of referrals for Level IV AAP service for rising 3rd-8th grade students. Fun Run. Our grand total is $22,650! Congratulations to Grayson M. (3rd grade) for being our grand prize winner bringing in over $1000! The Third Grade raised the most - $4,650, and Ms. Troup’s second grade class is the top earning class with $2,355! Those classes will celebrate with a popcorn party. Top grade earners and raffle prize winners will be announced next week. 

Camelot Cheer is back!  Our Camelot Cheer program is open to everyone grades 1-6. The program starts January 8th and will be Wednesday’s 3:55-5:30 pm. More information on the cheer program is included on a flyer in your student’s Thursday folder today. 

Parent Volunteers Needed for the Next Camelot Buddy Event: Monday, December 16th: 2:30 pm - 3:50 pm in the Cafeteria. Help make the Annual Holiday Buddy Event special by helping set up for cookie decorating and decorating of one Gingerbread House for the school. Next week, we continue with the Positivity Project (P2) character strength of KINDNESS.  Kindness is described by P2 as follows:  You are generous to others and you are never too busy to help out. You enjoy doing good deeds for other people. For more information, see the Kindness card, or any other character strength card at https://camelotes.fcps.edu/node/1945.

Dragon Leadership Council (DLC) Supplies Collection. As part of our focus on the character strength of kindness, our 5th and 6th grade students in the DLC are organizing a hygiene supplies collection for the Bailey’s Crossroads Homeless Shelter. Needed item include bath soap, shampoo, deodorant, hairbrushes, combs, toothpaste and toothbrushes. New supplies may be dropped off at school between December 10-18.

Falls Church Pyramid Parent Information Event. On December 10th at 6:30pm, Falls Church High School is hosting a session entitled, Healthy Choices: Information Session on Vaping/Drug Use in High Schools. This event is open to all parents from Falls Church, Luther Jackson, and our feeder elementary schools.  This session has the following goals: inform parents of the latest drug use information by high school students (including JUULing/ vape devices), communicate the dangers of the various drugs, help parents learn how to identify the latest drug paraphernalia and signs of drug use, and provide tips for communication with children about drug use. The presentation portion of the event will take no more than the first 40 minutes and will be delivered by a panel of school staff, a substance abuse prevention specialist, and a Fairfax County police officer.  The rest of the time will be open for Q&A as well as an opportunity for parents to come up and see actual samples of drug paraphernalia (including the latest vaping devices). This is a free event.  The event will be in the Falls Church High School cafeteria. Spanish & Vietnamese interpreters will be available. Questions: call Cait Saxton at FCHS, 703-207-4049

Next week, we continue with the Positivity Project (P2) character strength of GRATITUDE.  Gratitude is described by P2 as follows:  You are aware of and thankful for good things that happen. Book Fair. Our Book Fair is coming soon!  The dates are: December 2-December 6. Hours are 12/2- 9-5pm, 12/3- 9-6pm, 12/4- 9-5pm, 12/5 -8-6pm and 12/6 -8-5pm.  Students will have an opportunity to visit the Book Fair either with their class or individually during the week of December 2nd.  They may bring cash or a check made out to Camelot ES, to make purchases.  We will take credit cards from adults attending the book fair.  All purchases benefit our school by adding more books to our library and resources for our makerspace. PTA Meeting and Be SMART Presentation -- December 3, 7:15pm. Join us for our next PTA and parent presentation. The presentation is on the Be SMART program, which was created as a response to helping parents get informed and think through how to best parent through our crisis of rising gun violence in America. This expressly non-political presentation starts a conversation about this public health crisis and safe gun storage as something we can all do to keep our children, families, and communities safe. 

Donuts with Grownups -- December 5th, 8:30 am. Parents/guardians of K-2 students, mark your calendars and come enjoy a donut with your student in the cafeteria before school to start the day off right! (If you can’t make it, your child will be invited to have a donut with their grade level staff members at the same time, so please let your child’s teacher know if they should not have one.) Also, don’t forget to pop into the Book Fair and pick up your student’s favorite books! (Parents/guardians of 3-6 students, we will have another Donuts with Grownups in January for you and your students.)
